ANOMALIES
Zoe Porter
July 22nd, 2016 – August 13th, 2016
Strange Neighbour is pleased to present ‘Anomalies’, a solo exhibition by Zoe Porter, including a collaborative performance event with Olivia Porter & Sunny Verma.
‘Anomalies’ brings together drawing, watercolour, digital photography, video, sculpture and live collaborative performance. Many of these works present concepts associated with the complex relationships between animals and humans. The photographic series presents the artist as model, yet these are not traditional portraits, but rather they are an extension of performance based work, which is suggestive of states of transformation and becoming. Much of the work explores a female experience through a personal mythology, often presenting the human form undergoing metamorphosis or alteration, suggestive of the possibilities for other ways of being or existing.
Porter’s works on paper depict the animal-human hybrid form in an attempt at crossing the boundaries between the animal and the human, real and imaginary states, chaos and order. The recent series of watercolours convey a narrative featuring various monstrous characters, which are in a state of continual flux and who have also been displaced. The sculptural works are an extension of the works on paper and collage and can be considered as bricolage. Where found objects, soft-sculpture and familiar, everyday items are brought together to create new surreal, hybrid forms.
The performance-based work is a collaborative event with her sister Olivia Porter (Circus Oz) and Sunny Verma, which merges art, theatre, sound and physical performance highlighting the artistic and creative processes involved in producing artworks.
